Verne James Stangeland

Verne Stangeland, of Montevideo, died on Wednesday, August 7, 2002 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital at the age of 77.

Memorial services were conducted on Saturday, August 10, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Tim Lindhorst officiating.  Burial was in  the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Dawson, MN.


Verne James Stangeland was born on September 12, 1924 in Dawson, MN to John and Mary (Haugen) Stangeland.  He was baptized and confirmed at Riverside Lutheran Church in Dawson and graduated from Dawson High School in 1942.  He served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific, serving in Saipan and Iwo Jima.  On June 22, 1947 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Thompson at Garfield Lutheran Church They lived in various residences in Minnesota, Colorado, South Dakota and Indiana, where Verne worked as an electrician doing heavy  construction for Commonwealth Electric.  They moved to Montevideo in 1974 where he continued doing electrical work until his retirement in 1990.  He was a member of IBEW Local #343 and an active member of the local VFW, American Legion, 40 & 8 and Cooties.  He loved being an artist, especially wood carvings and caricatures.  He enjoyed helping others do their projects and was known for his sense of humor.  He was very active doing volunteer work including working at bingo for 19 years at the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; 3 children: Steven Stangeland of Granite Falls, MN; Jane Lipscomb and her husband Tomson of Boydton, VA and Jill Komperda and her husband J. Chris of Haleiwa, HI; grandchildren: Tomson Lipscomb of Thailand and Geoffrey Lipscomb of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Comfort Yeske and her husband John of Staples, MN as well as  numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and “outlaws”.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Enid Norsted and by a brother, Jerome Stangeland.
