Vernon Lund

May 6, 1934 — July 15, 2017


Vernon Lund, of Montevideo, died Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Home Front Assisted Living in Montevideo at the age of 84.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM on  Friday, July 21, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd with Rev. Lori Wold officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Vernon Joel Lund was born May 6, 1933 in Minneapolis, MN and was adopted by August and Ida Lund.  He was raised and attended school in Montevideo.  Vern was a lifelong farmer and he also was a bus driver and worked for many years for the Chippewa Historical Society doing general maintenance.

He had a One Man Band where he played at tractor and thrashing shows, nursing homes, radio stations, and a wide variety of events in eastern South Dakota and central Minnesota.  He even appeared on an episode of Jason Davis “On The Road” while they were filming in the area about a potato Klub dinner.  He also helped in preparing a facility for the filming of “Sweetland”, guided producers around the area, and was in a scene of the movie.  Vern took part in the documentary “Death of a Dream” as well.

Vern spoke Norwegian fluently and was an active member of the Sons of Norway.  He was known in the community for his sense of humor, story telling, his laughter, and he will be dearly missed by his friends and family.

Surviving Vern are his brothers: Arvid (Alvina) Melquist of Volga, SD and David Melquist of New Ulm, MN; a niece, Annica (Mike) Hornick and her children, Joe and Chris; numerous cousins; and many many special friends.

Vern is preceded in death by his parents and special friend, Darlene Alleckson.
