Vernon W. Olson, of Watson, died on Monday, March 9, 2015 at the Chippewa Co-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 89.
Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Watson Lutheran Church with Vicar Linda Estling and Pastor Willie Rosin officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at a later date at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Cemetery of Baxter.
Vernon W. Olson was born on May 13, 1925 in Yellow Medicine County, MN to Alfred and Anna “Gina” (Ims) Olson. He was baptized at Hazel Run Lutheran Church May 13, 1925 and confirmed also at Hazel Run Lutheran in 1939. He attend school in Clarkfield and graduated from Boyd High School. He farmed with his brother and worked at the machine shop that they started at a farm in rural Boyd in 1962. Vernon also worked the night shift at Chandler Industries when it was built in 1969 in Montevideo.
Vernon was joined in marriage to Joyce Sulflow on September 8, 1984 at St. John’s Lutheran Church of rural Montevideo. To this union two daughters were born, Nicole and Karla. Vernon enjoyed time with his family, gardening, going to auction sales and doing jigsaw puzzles with Nicole. Vernon also enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying his airplane and riding his Harley motorcycle.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Nicole of Watson and Karla and son-in-law Michael Kotzer of New Ulm; a brother, Chandler Olson and his wife Marlene; mother-in-law, Rena “Jerry” Sulflow; sisters-in-law: Rose Olson, Carol Nohrenberg and Sandra Sulflow; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert and Allard Olson; a sister Junez Ritchie; brothers-in-law: Michael Ritchie, Robert Johnson, Everett Nohrenberg and Eugene Sulflow; sisters-in-law: Macy Olson, Betty Olson and Inez Olson; and a father-in-law, Leonard Sulflow.
