Funeral Mass will be on Monday, July 20, at 11:00 AM, at the St. James Catholic Church in Dawson. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Interment will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery in rural Dawson. Virgil Cyril Van Dale was born on February 11, 1919, in Ghent, MN, to Adolph and Dora (Sanders) Van Dale. He was baptized, confirmed and received his First Communion at the Catholic Church in Minneota, MN. He attended country school through the eighth grade in rural Minneota and then graduated from the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris. Virgil and Annie DeMartelare were married in 1940, in Ghent. To this union, daughter, Patricia was born. He farmed in the Minneota area, and then worked construction, on a mink farm, and for Marshall Produce in Marshall. In 1979, he moved with his mother to Dawson, living with her until she moved to the Johnson Memorial Home. He lived in Parkview Apartments in Dawson until his health made him move to the Appleton Nursing Home in July of 2006. He died there on Friday, July 17, 2009, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 6 days. Survivors include his daughter, Patty (Alan) Walgrave of rural Madison: 3 grandchildren: Vicki (David) Thomson of Alexandria, MN, Jodi (Steve) Hoffmann of Milbank, SD, and Gwen (Bruce) Perreault of Moorhead, MN; 5 great-grandchildren: Tanner & Hayley Thomson, Justin and Jenna Perreault and Bryce Hoffmann; 2 nieces: Donna (Don) Masters of Sumner, WA, and Marilyn (Chuck) Thompson of Fountain Hills, AZ; cousins, other family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; and his sister, Marie Knutson.
