Virginia (Ginny) Boraas went peacefully home to be with the Lord on Thurs., Dec. 10, 2020, at Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson MN after a brief battle with COVID 19. She was surrounded by the love of her family and the TLC of Care Center staff.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2021 beginning at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson with Rev. Kendall Stelter officiating.
Virginia was born November 12, 1927 to Fred & Alice Augeson on the home farm north of Montevideo. Ginny, the youngest, grew up in the Montevideo area making many cherished memories with eleven brothers and sisters. She attended Sunday School at Rosewood and was confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Ginny began school at County School #51 before attending Montevideo Public Schools. She waitressed at the Watson Café and the Black & White Café in Montevideo. Favorite activities in her early years included riding their farm horses, Bonnie and Ribbon, as well as “going dancing”. Later she enjoyed fishing, traveling with her sisters, quilting, sewing doll clothes, embellishing hand towels, as well as winning a quarter from you in her favorite dice game.
Virginia married Gordon Hermanson in 1946 in Montevideo and had sons Terry and Ken. She sadly lost Gordy in an auto accident in 1954. In 1957, Ginny and Amer Boraas were married, moved to Dawson and made it their forever home. There, Amer, a well-respected auto mechanic, owned and operated a service station. The family was blessed with brothers Robert and Bradley.
The large Augeson family celebrated many events together which were a treasured blessing for Ginny’s children, creating a multitude of fond memories with many aunts, uncles and cousins. Boraas family gatherings added even more opportunities to grow up among loving and caring relatives.
Prior to Amer’s passing in 2008, Ginny moved from their home on 9th Street in Dawson to Golf View Apartments near the hospital, so she could more easily visit Amer during his illness. After his passing, she continued to enjoy baking, canning, crocheting tops for towels and playing dice or dominoes with her many friends who lived nearby.
In May 2018, Ginny moved to Johnson Memorial Assisted Living. After a short stay there she moved to the adjoining new and beautiful Johnson Memorial Care Center. Staff at both places always went the extra mile to make her feel “at home,” and loved. She was showered daily with attention and an abundance of TLC.
Ginny will be remembered for her friendly disposition to friends and strangers alike, unique style of letter writing, baking, crocheted towels, and proudly taking your quarter in a dice game. Special memories for her family include home-made lefse and mom’s fried chicken. Her boys learned early on that Ginny had the eyes and ears of an eagle, so if you’re late for curfew, your car sits under the tree. In later years it was important not to call or talk to Ginny during the Sunday radio church service! Her grandchildren LOVED and looked forward to the fun, laughter, adventure and good eating that were all part of staying with Grandma and Grandpa in Dawson.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, sons Ken Hermanson and Brad Boraas, siblings and spouses Velma, Opal (Ed), Fern (Jim), Cleo (Don), Ruby (Maurice), Pearl (Art), Wayne (Sara), Walter (Ida), Harold (Florence), Warren (Geraldine), Roger (Florence) and Stanley Haff, brothers and sisters-in-law Reuben (Mabel) Boraas, Beaumont (Diane) Boraas, Margaret (Russ) Renstrom, and Esther (Ray) Kramer.
