Wallace "Wally" Heggestad

Wallace “Wally” Heggestad, of Montevideo, died Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 90.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Watson Lutheran Church in  Watson with Vicar Linda Estling officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, from 5-7 PM at Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service at 6:30PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Wallace Sigvald Heggestad was born on July 3, 1926 in Montevideo, MN to Sigvald and Alma (Gunderson) Heggestad.  He was baptized at Big Bend Lutheran Church on August 19th, 1926 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  He moved to Appleton at a young age where he attended Appleton Elementary School.  Wallace also attended the MN State Academy for the Blind in Faribault, MN where Wallace and his brother, Wayne, were active on their tumbling team.  Wallace and Wayne tumbled at the state basketball tournament at Northrop Auditorium in Minneapolis in 1942.

Wally went to work in Minneapolis at the Jeffery Quest Foundry in 1943.  He then worked at North Star Woolen Mills and was later employed at Pioneer Engineering.  Wally later went to work at Hennepin Transportation until 1954 when he purchased the Fosnes Fairway which later became the Watson Grocery & Locker, which he operated until September of 2001.

He married Corinne Christiansen in 1950 and together they had a son, Steven, in 1954.  Wallace was later united in marriage to Cathleen Campbell on June 16th, 1973. To this union a daughter, Kristie, was born in 1974.

Wally was active in the Watson community.  He sang in the Watson Male Chorus and in the Watson Church Choir, served on the Watson City Council and fire department.  Wally was the Watson Sunday School superintendent. He was a charter member of the Watson Lions Club, receiving the Melvin Jones Award in 1995.  He served 17 years on the Housing & Redevelopment Authority Board and was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Wallace is survived by his wife, Cathleen; his son, Steven (Julie) Heggestad; his daughter, Kristie (Jason) Eid; grandchildren; Bryon (Becky) Heggestad, Shana (Dustin) Anspach, Emily Onstad, Paige, and Thomas Eid, Adam (Brittany) Dolen and Aaron Dolen;  great-grandchildren Ava and Emersyn Anspach, Roman and Delaney Dolen; brother, Richard (Janice) Heggestad;  sister, Beverly Witte and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents, 3 brothers; Roger, Wayne, Donovan and 3 sisters; Marjorie, LaVon, Charlotte.
