Wally Olson, of Milan, died on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Homefront in Montevideo at the age of 87.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 1:30 P.M. at Big Bend Lutheran Church. Rev. Kristine Isder will officiate and interment will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 - 7 P.M. at the Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service at 7:00 PM and at the church for one hour before services on Tuesday.
Wallace Leray Olson was born April 15, 1927 in Big Bend Township, Chippewa County, MN to Arthur and Tillie (Norby) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at Big Bend Lutheran Church and attended rural school. Wally was a WWII veteran serving in the US Navy Seabees stationed in Okinawa and Hawaii in 1945. On September 5, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ruth Gustad at Big Bend Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed in rural Milan until 1995, when they moved into Milan. Wally’s love of travel took them throughout the United States and many foreign countries. Beginning in 1985, they spent winters in the Mesa, AZ area. Wally and Ruth enjoyed 60 years of marriage. Ruth died August 10, 2008. He was united in marriage with Doris (Kimpling) Hiyunga on June 25, 2011. In addition to farming Wally served on the Southern MN Beet Sugar Cooperative board of directors and the Watson Farmers Elevator board.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; four children: Gerald (and Marge) Olson of Danvers, MN, Kenneth (and Carol) Olson of Milan, MN, Debra (and Robert) Munsterman of Lake Poinsett, SD, and Richard (and Kim) Olson, of Milan, MN; 10 grandchildren: Kristi Olson, Kelly (and Adam) Carruth, Ashley Olson, Benjamin Olson, Ryan Munsterman, Alison (and Derek) Harwood, Justin Munsterman; Brenda (and Mark) Welling; Jeff (and Sheri) Reuss; Jay (and Trina) Reuss; 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, David (Vera) Olson of Milan, MN; a sister, Janice (Jerry) Lund of Montevideo, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Ruth; and a great-granddaughter, Courtney Staton.
