Walter Nicolai, of Montevideo and formerly of Maynard, MN and Sisseton, SD, died on Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Chippewa Co-Montevideo Hospital at the age of 94. Committal services will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sisseton Cemetery in Sisseton, SD with Rev. Suzanne Benidt officiating. Walter Julius Nicolai was born on July 2, 1916 to Emil and Emily (Keller) Nicolai. He grew up in the Montevideo/Maynard area and attended rural schools. On January 12, 1946 he was united in marriage to Cora Eide in Seattle, WA. They made their home in the Montevideo area, where he farmed and worked at an elevator. They moved to Minneapolis, where he worked for a number of years as a church custodian before retiring. Following his retirement, they lived at a home on Belle Taine Lake for about six years before moving to Sisseton, SD. Following the death of his wife Cora, he moved to Montevideo and lived at Brookside Manor until moving to the Luther Haven Nursing Home about two years ago. He loved to fish, enjoyed the outdoors and especially enjoyed his family. He is survived by two sons: William (and Linda) Nicolai of St. Paul, MN and Ronald (and Rosemary) Nicolai of Sisseton, SD; four grandchildren: Stacy, Andrea, Luke and Ryan; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Bill Nicolai of Roseville, MN; two sisters, Margaret Larsen of Montevideo and Marion Harvey of Clara City, MN as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Cora in 1998; and by brothers, Morris, John and George Nicolai.
