Walter Rikke

Walter Rikke, of Montevideo, died on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at the Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo the age of 87. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo with Rev. Donald S. McKee officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 - 7 P.M. on Wednesday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo. Walter Merle Rikke was born on September 7, 1924 in Clarkfield, MN to Oliver and Mabel (Ahlen) Rikke. He grew up in the Clarkfield area and attended rural schools. He served in the US Army during World War II. On April 6, 1957, he was united in marriage to Shirley Koenen at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo. They lived in Montevideo where he worked at Swift and Co., the Minnesota Department of Transportation for thirty years, and part-time at Chandler Industries and Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He was a long-time member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and ushered for many years and was a member of VFW Post # 380. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, lawn work, home maintenance and especially his grandchildren. He was currently a resident at the Luther Haven Nursing Home. He is survived by two sons: Ryan Rikke of Savage, MN and Dan (and Susan) Rikke of Shakopee, MN; two grandsons: Dillon and Max Rikke; three sisters: Delores Fierstine of Big Lake, MN, June Holen of Montevideo and Dorothy Pearson of Madison, MN; as well as by a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley in 2009; and a sister, Phyllis Pearson.
