Wilbert Macziewski was born on October 21, 1928, on a farm in Grace Township to William and Lena (Borchardt) Macziewski. The family lived and worked on two farms. Sadly, Wilbert's parents passed away early in his life, leading him, his brothers and sister to live with his grandparents, Ernest and Pauline Macziewski. He attended grade school near the farm and balanced his education with farm work. Wilbert graduated in 1946 and subsequently enlisted in the Army, serving in Japan as a clerk at the camp P.X. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
Following his military service, Wilbert and his brother Lorence shared accommodations and held various jobs in Montevideo. During a wedding dance in Clara City, Wilbert met Elizabeth (Betty) Van Heel, and they began dating. The couple married on August 4, 1951, and settled in Montevideo. Wilbert had several jobs before joining the Cenex Propane Plant in St. James, MN, in 1958. His career with Cenex saw him promoted to positions in Aberdeen, SD, and Ashby, MN. In 1968, the family moved to Mahtomedi, MN, where Wilbert worked as a regional manager, eventually relocating to Madison, SD. As retirement approached, Wilbert and Betty returned to Montevideo to be closer to family. He retired from Cenex in 1990 but resumed work in 1992, driving a tender truck and hauling fertilizer until his final retirement in 2008.
Wilbert enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends. He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo and an active participant in the VFW.
Wilbert is survived by his loving wife, Betty; his children: Mark (Karen) Macziewski of Gold Canyon, AZ, Keith (Judy) Macziewski of Sioux City, IA, Paula Stillions of Montevideo, MN, Larry (Laurie) Macziewski of Rapid City, SD, Glen (Kim) Macziewski of Garretson, SD, Jon (Denise) Macziewski of Fairmont, MN, and Joel (Yvonne) Macziewski, Custer, SD; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Alvin Macziewski, Lorence Macziewski, Mabel Joyce, and Ernest Macziewski.
