William James Monahan was born December 13, 1959 to Walter (Jake) and Wilma (Schmahl) Monahan of Minneota, MN. He attended St. Edwards Catholic and Minneota Public Schools. Bill’s father passed away when Bill was 10; and he was lovingly raised and cherished by his mother until her death in 2007.
Bill met Deb Kahnk of Watson while Deb was attending college in Marshall, and followed her to her Army assignment in Fort Jackson, South Carolina where they were married on April 23, 1982. After an accident ended Deb’s military assignment, they moved back to Montevideo. Bill then continued the driving career he had started at age 16. Bill was both a company driver, and an owner-operator. Bill’s restless nature had him moving from company to company, but he had long tenure at Watson Trucklines; Viessman Trucking; Cenex CHS; Cyr Trucking; and finally, all roads led to Dooley’s Petroleum. He loved driving Petes and pulling tankers, but most of all, he loved talking to all the friends he made along the way. He loved chatting on the phone to all his buddies, and rarely missed a Sunday morning “sermon” with the guys on the road. Cancer ended his trucking career in December 2021, but cancer could not destroy his love for the road and the many friends he made through his life.
Trucking was his life, but his heart belonged to his family – especially his daughter, Shelby. Shelby and her fiancé, Josh Moen of Boyd, have blessed his life with their children, Austin, Macy, Lexy, Blakely, and Jersey. Bill loved being a grand-paw. Other passions in his life were road trips with Deb and friends, good restaurants, a great prime rib, cold beer, and Harley Davidsons – we have a lifetime of memories to sustain us.
Bill is survived by his wife, Deb, of Montevideo; daughter Shelby (Josh Moen); grandchildren, Austin, Macy, Lexy, Blakely and Jersey; sisters-in-law Sue (Tom) Anderson of Montevideo and Vickie (Ken) Wiesen of Sartell; six nieces and nephews and their children; and many extended family members.
Along with his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his mother- and father-in-law, Ray and Selma Kahnk.
