Winfred "Wimpy" Schmidt, of Madison and formerly of Marietta, MN, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the Madison Hospital at the age of 95.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at 1:30 P.M. at the Madison Lutheran Home Chapel with Rev. G. Duane Baun officiating. Interment will be at the Augusta Cemetery at Marietta.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson from 3-5 P.M.
Winfred "Wimpy"Walter Schmidt was born March 24, 1919 in Mehurin Township, Lac qui Parle County, MN the son of John and Theresa (Krengel) Schmidt. He attended Dist 54 and graduated from Marietta High School in 1938.He was united in marriage with Lyla Hillman June 4, 1944 at Zachaeus Lutheran Church in Canby. After marriage, they made their home on a farm near Marietta and later moved to a home on Highway 212 where he owned and operated the State Line Produce and later State Line Station. They had an egg production business. He also did custom spraying and combining. In later years he experimented with farming and sustainable agriculture. Wimpy enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing and Studebakers, and was known as a master breadmaker.
He is survived by three children: Sonja (Larry) Farmer of Marietta,MN, Wayne (Mary) Schmidt of Tucson, AZ, and Romelle (Wayne) Frey of Jackson, MI; five grandchildren: Tracy Farmer, Kristie (Murdock) James, Brendon (fiancé Rachel Haney) Frey, Mikell Frey, and Callie Frey; two great-grandchildren: Murphy and Lukus James; siblings: Ruth (Robert) Ross, Rhoda Wittnebel, and Eldon (Barb) Schmidt; and Cat.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife in April of 2013; a son, Lee Wayne in infancy; brothers: Dietrich, Raymond, Victor, Armin, Henry, and Lester; and sisters: Irene Christensen and Louise Hacker.
